How are you spending Memorial Day?
Officially, I'm not marking Memorial Day at all. We don't have it here in the Great White North. Our equivalent is held on November 11th, marking the official end of WWI (treaty was signed on the 11th hour (which is when we observe a minute of silence) on the the 11th day of the 11th month). So my Memorial Day is free to observe other things, like my thirtieth birthday.
I got to make myself some cake - I chose a no-bake cheesecake which is chilling as we speak. My kids got me a pastry cutter and a bambu pot scraper, both things I'd had my eye on. Last week some cash and coffee money made it my away along with some kootsacs which I used today for my spilt peas and lentils. Last Friday night my sister and brother-in-law and my nephew arrived and we started the weekend with my gift: a night out for Chris and I. It was great. On Sunday, a friend left me a card and a copy of Tales of Beedle the Bard. Today, part I (knitting needles) of my gift from my in-laws was joined by part II - a vegetarian cookbook I've been hankering after. (Along with some cute clothes for the kiddos they got when in Hawaii last week.) A couple of co-workers called to sing happy birthday, facebook loves me, and Chris's gift for me (of which I have an inkling) in en route in the mail.
Low-key and lovely. Perfect.
What's your worst habit?
Number one answer: Wasting time.
I'll hum and haw over little decisions. I lose time reading the paper or magazines or playing scramble on the computer. I spend time making a list of things I need to do and never bother to look at it. I procrastinate.
I'll get better at it. One day. For now, I need to browse etsy for nothing in particular.
Cheers.
Which color do you think best represents you and why?
Submitted by hocuspocus88Well according to the all-knowing internet-quiz people:
.
you are lightcyan
#E0FFFF
Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well.
Your saturation level is very low - you have better things to do than jump headfirst into every little project. You make sure your actions are going to really accomplish something before you start because you hate wasting energy making everyone else think you're working.
Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation.
What did you think about the Vice Presidential debate?
There was a debate?
Ah - just kidding. I knew that, though I didn't realize it was the two Vices going at it.
Instead, I watched our own federal leaders debate instead. (We head to the polls on Oct. 14th.)
I missed parts of it which isn't surprising because the debate ran between 6 and 8pm, smack in the middle of Peaches fussy time and Gus's 30 min bedtime preamble. However, I was very glad to have taken the time where I could.
I thought the opposition leaders did a pretty good job of calling Harper (and each other at times) to account. I was especially pleased that they continued to harp on (on pun intended) the Conservatives lack of a platform. I was more impressed with Dion than I have ever been: he really seemed to step up and lay things out. So far he's always seemed so weak to me and if I've supported him from time to time, it's been out of pity. I suppose that's why Harper is campaigning on 'leadership.' Layton always looks and sounds confident but something about him just rubbed me the wrong way, and I usually get a kick out of they guy, whether or not I agree with his particular stances. I was impressed by May - she seemed to know her stuff - though I really wish she wouldn't talk through everyone else. I know she wasn't the only one, but it grated on me. Oh, but I did think it was fantastic that she brought up Proportional Representation. Good one, May.
Oh, and if you get the chance, read some liveblogging that happened during the debate. (This is also how I got some feedback on the French language debate 2 days ago.) Check out Macleans.ca/blog for their input. I got more than a few chuckles out of it.
Advance polls have already begun.
Time's ticking.
I don't care how you vote - just that you get yourself educated and get out there and DO IT.
Cheers.
If you were born the opposite sex, what would your name be?
I would have been Benjamin.
Growing up, I really didn't like the name but it's since made my short-ish list of baby boy names.
And instead of
Morgan, John Taylor, Brittany and Logan,
we would have been
Chelsea, Kelly, Scott and Garrett.
Strange: I wonder what that family would have been like?
What have you lost that you wish you could get back?

My engagement ring. He bought it in Germany and (once I could finally enter a jewelery store again without tearing up) I've yet to see one remotely like it since.
How do you react when you're stressed?
Submitted by Deep Thinker
1. My shoulders turn into a slab of marble. Rock hard.
2. I cry. My reactions are completely disproportionate to the situation being responded to.
3. I sleep - especially when I'm stressed because I have stuff to do. During university, I slept a lot when my papers were due.
What is the scariest experience you've had with Mother Nature?

The one that I remember most clearly:
A few years back I went body surfing with friends on the west coast of Vancouver Island. One of our number was a certified lifeguard, but we still paired up so we each had one other to keep an eye on as a safety precaution. I was terrible at the surfing thing: couldn't get enough momentum or just wasn't able to catch the wave at the right time. Eventually, Lifeguard called us all to shift back up the beach; we had all moved down with the current. I hopped off my board, only to realize I was in water that was just over my head. I couldn't get enough of a grounding to walk myself in, yet the waves were so strong - the pull out and away - I couldn't float or kick myself back in.
It only lasted for a few moments, but they were the first when I realized how completely helpless I was, less than 20 meters from shore. It scared me. Completely unable to get myself out of [potential] danger.
Of course, all I had to do was call for 6-foot Phil. He walked over and I grabbed his hand and immediately felt relieved and safe. Within moments I had my own feet on the sand, able to walk in.
It's not a harrowing story, but I think it was good for me to experience: some healthy respect for Mother Nature never hurts and that's how I got a bit more in me.
What do you find interesting or unique about your family history?
1. On my paternal side, we can trace me back to William Booth, the guy who founded the Salvation Army. Did you know that as well as its significant social activities, it's also a church denomination?
2. On my maternal side, we can go back several 'greats' to an uncle who had the name of James Knox Polk; also known as the 11th President of the United States in the 1840s. Among other things, he was known for supporting and implementing (as best he could) Manifest Destiny . As a branch of our family now lives in Canada, I kinda get a kick out of this, though I'd say that this branch has produced some 'leaves' that are quite content that Great Uncle Jim didn't get North of the 49th.
3. On my other paternal side, we have Ukrainian landowners, (near Kiev) who had to flee because the Bolsheviks didn't like landowners.
4. Said landowners arrived in Saskatchewan, had trouble finding work, so my great-grandpa changed his name from the Russian sounding version to "Stephen" and borrowed his wife's German maiden name, Mueller, changed that to Miller, and found finding work much easier. When my grandpa couldn't get into the army during WWII under-age in Saskatchewan, he and his brother came to Vancouver and took a page out of their dad's book, changing their last name to Miller and managed to get into the army that way.
hmmm, these things really are just interesting for those to whom they belong, eh? :)
